How does Discovering Dementia protect your privacy and data?

By using our website, being interviewed, or providing us with any personal information we will assume you are agreeing to your information being used and disclosed in the ways described in this policy.

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) effective from May 2018 gives all EU citizens more rights and protections for their personal data, to minimise the possibility of theft and fraud.

These regulations include provisions for the following areas

Your rights 

  • You have the right to ask us to stop processing your personal data.

  • You have a right to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you and if there are any discrepancies in the information we provide, please let us know and we will correct them. 

  • If you want to see the information we hold for you, please send a description of the information you want to see and proof of your identity by post to: Discovering Dementia, 31 Church Hill, Hollowell, Northants NN68RR. We will not accept these requests by email, that way we can ensure that we only provide personal data to the right person.

Why we need your data. We need to know very basic personal data for the proper record-keeping and  necessary administration.  We do not sell or share personal details to third parties. 

Is the information you provide secure? We make every effort to protect your personal data. Laptops are for sole use only and password protected, as are our emails. We undertake regular reviews of who has access to information that we hold, to ensure that your information is only accessible by appropriately trained staff. Please note, that no data transmission over the internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. 

How long we keep your data 

We will keep your information for as long as required to enable us to operate our services, but we will not keep your information for any longer than is necessary. We will take into consideration our legal obligations and tax and accounting rules when determining how long we should retain your information. When we no longer need to retain your information, we will ensure it is securely disposed of, at the appropriate time. 

Data Protection Act

In carrying out our day to day activities we process and store personal information relating to our supporters and we are therefore required to adhere to the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998. We take our responsibilities under this act seriously and we ensure the personal information we obtain is held, used, transferred and otherwise processed in accordance with that Act and all other applicable data protection laws. 

Information sharing and disclosure

  • We will not sell or swap your information with any third party.

  • We may disclose your personal information to third parties if we are required to do so through a legal obligation (for example to the police or a government body); to enable us to enforce or apply our terms and conditions or rights under an agreement; or to protect us, for example, in the case of suspected fraud or defamation.

  • We do not share your information for any other purposes.
